What this site measures, and how to switch it off.

This site sets no cookies and asks for nothing: no accounts, forms or newsletter sign-ups.

Analytics are currently off: this site measures nothing at all.

What is measured

When analytics are on, the site uses Vercel Web Analytics, provided by Vercel Inc., which also hosts the site. It counts page views and a few actions: emailing Brett or his representatives (recorded only as which of the two, never your address); copying a bio; following a link to another site; and reaching a missing page.

Each record can hold the page address (with any query string removed, apart from campaign tags such as utm_source), the referring site, an approximate location (country, region, city), and your browser, operating system and device type. Vercel tells one visit from another by a hash of the request that is discarded after 24 hours, and does not follow you across other sites. The site owner sees only aggregated statistics.

Who is responsible, and why

The site is run by Brett Neichin, who decides what is measured; Vercel Inc. processes the data on the site owner’s behalf as the host. The reason is a legitimate interest in knowing which work and which press materials people use. Vercel is based in the United States, so the data may be processed there under Vercel’s data-processing terms, and Vercel guarantees it for the reporting window of the site’s plan but may keep it longer.

You can ask what is held about you, object to it, or ask for it to be deleted by writing to the address below. If you are in the EU or UK you may also complain to your data-protection authority.

Turning it off

Browsers that send Global Privacy Control are treated as opted out, and so is anyone browsing with JavaScript switched off. You can also opt out on this device. The choice is saved in your browser’s local storage, as is the site’s “pause motion” setting; neither is a cookie, and neither is sent anywhere.

With JavaScript off, nothing is measured on this device.

Email

If you email Brett or his representatives, your message is handled by that mail provider like any other email. Questions about this notice: bneichin@gmail.com.
